Our Story

By Clinicians, for Clinicians

As a pediatric anesthesiologist, Dr. Nick Dalesio has dedicated his career to optimizing, improving, and teaching airway management to clinicians caring for children. One of the challenges that Nick has been focused on is how difficult it is to place a breathing tube in a child, something that needs to be done regularly in urgent and emergency situations. In fact, the first-attempt success rate for placing a breathing tube in a child outside of the operating suite can be as low as 50%!

Thinking about these and related problems for both kids and adults, Nick envisioned a system that would combine a wearable video camera with live video-streaming over a wireless mobile network. This would allow any care giver in any location to call for an expert physician to help with a complicated procedure, virtually bringing that expert directly to the patient’s side. The care giver would retain the use of their hands so they could continue to treat the patient while getting virtual “over-the-shoulder” help.

So that’s what we set out to build. Then, right when we had the first version of the platform working, COVID-19 hit. It turned out that MD AirSupport was great for reducing exposure and limiting PPE use, which meant our system started being used in hospitals. Along the way, doctors and other clinicians started using MD AirSupport for many other clinical applications of the system. Today, there’s as much use of MD AirSupport outside the hospital as there is in the hospital.
